Molly's Sunday Post

This weekend was full of fun once again! I had a baby shower for my friend Kristi who is having a baby boy in August & an exciting wedding on Saturday.  We had so much fun and the time flew by.

The shower I attended on Saturday was for my good friend Kristi. She and her husband Matt are expecting a baby boy and I had a lot of fun finding gifts for her shower. Of course there are more options for baby girls but I found some fun things and put them in this basket. Diapers and necessities are always a welcome gift when in doubt!

Kristi will be an excellent Mother!

Aaron and I are slowly continuing to work
on house projects and fill our home with things
we like as we find them. We found some
end tables for our den this week that were on sale.
Once we got them home and set up I found lamps to
match. Its amazing how lamps can add so much
to a room.

We stayed over at Aaron's cousin Jennifer's on Saturday night and she was once again a great host. I found a quote that made me think of her. {" The ornaments of your house are the guests who frequent it".} Aaron and I have become ornaments at her house this summer and we are so thankful for her and her husband's hospitality! Thanks for pancakes and coffee this morning guys :)

Have a wonderful Sunday and continue to enjoy fast weekends this Summer
July is right around the corner!

Old Sayings and Wives' Tales

I have been waiting to share some of these old sayings for a long time because I think they are so cute and interesting (and some confusing).  I don't know how we got on the subject, but my grandma Carol Johnson told me some of these recently this year and I've been intrigued ever since.  So here they are, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

A few of these may be familiar, but my great grandma Grace Jensen was born in the year 1905 and lived to be 101 years old, so that just shows how long they have been around.

Just thought I'd also share a picture of my mother's day gift to my mom.

If it rains on Monday, it will rain 3 days that week.

"If you sew on Sunday, you will rip out the stitches with your nose when you get to heaven!!"  (This meant that Sunday is a day of rest.)

"Who does she think she is, the Queen of Sheeba?"  (I don't know where this came from, but my family even says this today.)

If the dog eats grass, it's going to rain.

If you drop a piece of silverware, that means company is coming.  The direction the fork is facing, is the direction that the company is coming from.

Throw salt over your right shoulder for good luck.

If you spill the toothspicks or the broom tips over, that means company is coming.

Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in the morning, sailor's warning.

According to my mother, if my great grandma wanted to say that someone was fat, she would say, "My goodness that woman is stout!"

Instead of going to the bathroom, my great grandma would say, "I'm going to the biffy."

Yellow yellow, catch a fellow.

If the bride sees the groom before the ceremony on their wedding day, it will bring them bad luck.

Summer Cool-Whip Salad

Another good salad for the summer!  This recipe came from my aunt Karen and is quite sweet- could almost be eaten for dessert.

RECIPE

1 pkg. jello (desired flavor)
1 pkg instant vanilla pudding
1 pkg tapioca pudding - in a box similar to an instant pudding box (I don't think they make instant tapioca anymore)
2 cups boiling water
1 small can crushed pineapple (drained)
desired fruit (I use cut up strawberries)
1 container of cool whip

DIRECTIONS

Mix the jello, instant vanilla pudding, and tapioca pudding together.  Add the two cups boiling water.  Cool until it thickens.  Add the can of crushed pineapple (make sure to press out the excess juice that doesn't come from simply straining it) and the desired fruit.  Finish by adding the container of cool whip, chill, and enjoy!

Feel free to have fun adding a variety of fruit. You can't beat fresh and healthy summer fruit!

Modern old souls were camping at Lake Shetek for Father's Day weekend!

We enjoyed many snacks, drinks, and nice weather this weekend. Yesterday got busy and I didn't have time to blog so I am catching up today. I brought one of my favorite dips to share this weekend and am posting the recipe! Its very easy and nice to put together the night before. I call it " Piggy Dip".

Shane sampling some dip
Piggy Dip

4 1/2 c. sour cream
2 c. real mayo
2/3 c. fine chopped onion
1 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. garlic salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
2 boxes Knorr vegetable dry soup mix
1 1/2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
mix and chill
(best overnight)

Piggy dip got its name from the fact that you can't stop eating it, like a piggy :)
Enjoy!

We also snacked on fresh

bing cherries this weekend.

They are in season and on

sale at a lot of local

grocery stores!

Enjoy summer & try new things,
we do!

These Sangria recipes are meant to be made in a 70-80 oz pitcher. For large parties use a large glass punch bowl and double the recipes or make 2 or 3 different flavors! Mix and match recipes or use your own ideas to personalize your own Sangria! Have a great day

Molly's first post

I have made a resolution to try to post on the blog every Sunday. Sunday is a usually a relaxing day for me and the Clinic where I work is closed so I do not have an excuse! Watch for updates from me on Sundays :)

Entertaining is fun for me and I always look forward to it. Remember to keep it simple and have fun. If you, the host, are enjoying yourself, others will, too. Let your hair down and be REAL. Be rested and ready for your friends! Also show that you are happy to have them. Make them know you are glad to be spending time with them. Everyone has busy lives and this time is special.

My husband has been traveling for his job and was in California last week. He had commented on how fresh and nice their organic lemons were. They had them as centerpieces for meetings and put them in their water for meals. This gave me a fun idea for summertime!

I put some fresh lemons in a glass bowl on our dinning room table and they brightened up the room and also provided a sour pick-me-up in boring water! Green tea is also spiced up with the help of lemons. Apart from being an amazing body alkalizer/alkaliser, lemon water also gives the following health benefits:

  • Lemons are antiseptic
  • Lemon water has excellent digestive properties and can ease heartburn, bloating and other digestion problems
  • Lemon water cleanses and stimulates the liver and kidneys
  • Lemon juice contains calcium, magnesium and potassium
  • Lemon juice has been known to relieve asthma
  • Lemon water (hot) offers relief from cold and flu symptoms while providing some much needed Vitamin C
  • Lemon juice is a great skin cleanser

So if you do not do anything else – start every single day with a glass of lovely lemon water!

Happy Sunday from Modern Old Souls!
